What is a Smart Home?
I vividly remember the first time I bought a smartphone. See, I love technology and how quickly it changes. I get excited, like a kid on Christmas Eve, on my way to Best Buy to get that next new gadget. When I showed my Dad my first smartphone, he said “why would anyone need that? I’m just fine with my ‘dumb’ phone.” (He now finally owns an IPhone.) I was pumped to show my wife everything it could do and how it could help her get things accomplished quicker. She immediately said, “Do you really need this?! That thing seems like a huge waste of time and I definitely won’t ever buy one myself!” (She has probably had five different smartphones by now, uses them to run her business, and can’t live without it.) I love that I proved both of them wrong, and I am absolutely amazed at how far they have come since the first smartphone.

I feel like we are in the same place with smart homes right now. People aren’t sure what smart homes are and if they are something that they actually need. I believe that it is the next big thing for consumers, something that everyone you know will own and rely in the future.
I’m sorry, I still haven’t even told you what a smart home is, per Coldwell Banker, a smart home is defined as:
“A home that is equipped with network-connected products (aka “smart products,” connected via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or similar protocols) for controlling, automating and optimizing functions such as temperature, lighting, security, safety or entertainment, either remotely by a phone, tablet, computer or a separate system within the home itself.
In order to be categorized as a smart home, the property must have a smart security feature that either controls access or monitors the property or a smart temperature feature, in addition to a reliable Internet connection. It must also include at least two additional features from this list:
- Lighting (smart light bulbs and lighting systems)
- Safety (smart fire / carbon monoxide detectors and nightlights)
- Entertainment (smart TVs and TV streaming services)
- Appliances (smart refrigerators and smart washer / dryers)
- Heating / Cooling (smart HVAC system, smart fans or vents)
- Outdoors (smart plant sensors and watering systems)
- Security (smart locks, smart alarm systems or cameras)
- Temperature (smart thermostats)”

Basically, a smart home is making certain functions in your house automated and/or controlled by your smartphone. Your smart thermostat (Nest is a very popular model) can learn to adjust the temperature when you typically leave home for work. This can save you a lot of money in the long run. You can set your garage door to open, doors to unlock and all of your lights to come on, when your car pulls up to your house. The possibilities of home automation are endless and new gadgets are being developed every day. Have you ever left your house or just snuggled into bed and worried about whether or not you locked your doors? With the August lock you can check your smartphone and lock the doors without having to get out of bed.
I cannot wait to get started on my smart home soon!!

5 Tricks to Keep Your Pipes from Exploding this Winter
- Article From HouseLogic.com

Published: November 02, 2015Learn how to prevent your pipes from freezing, even if you think they may already have started to freeze.

New homeowners may have heard that winterization is important, but in the hubbub of your first year living in a home you own (finally!), it can be easy to overlook the need to prepare for the cold weather ahead. After all, it’s just not something renters deal with; prepping pipes for winter (http://www.houselogic.com/home-advice/plumbing/prevent-freezing-pipes/) is often the landlord’s job.

Ideally, you should winterize your pipes in the fall, before winter seriously sets in. But if you’ve forgotten and all of a sudden you’re in the middle of a deep freeze, there’s still time to prevent disaster.
Here are some easy techniques to save your pipes from bursting (http://www.houselogic.com/home-advice/plumbing/freezing-water-pipes/):
Turn On Your Faucets
If the temperatures have dropped into freezing and intend to stay there, turning on your faucets — both indoors and out — can keep water moving through your system and slow down the freezing process. There’s no need to waste gallons of water: Aim for about five drips per minute.

Open Cabinet Doors
During cold weather, open any cabinet doors covering plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom. This allows the home’s warm air to better circulate, which can help prevent the exposed piping from freezing. While this won’t help much with pipes hidden in walls, ceilings, or under the home, it can keep water moving and limit the dangerous effects of freezing weather.
Wrap Your Pipes
If your pipes are already on their merry way towards freezing, wrapping them with warm towels might do the trick. You can cover them with the towels first and then pour boiling water on top, or use already-wet towels — if your hands can stand the heat (use gloves for this). This should help loosen the ice inside and get your system running again.
Pull Out Your Hairdryer
A hairdryer (or heat gun) can be a godsend when your pipes are freezing. If hot rags aren’t doing the trick, try blowing hot air directly on the pipes. Important note: You don’t want to use a blow torch or anything that produces direct flames, which can damage your pipes and turn a frozen pipe into an even worse disaster. You’re trying to melt the ice — not your pipes.
Frozen Pipes? Shut Off The Water
Have your pipes already frozen? Turn off the water immediately. (Hopefully you know where the master shut-off is, but if not, now’s the time to find it!) Make sure to close off any external water sources, like garden hose hookups. This will prevent more water from filling the system (http://www.houselogic.com/home-advice/foundations/how-to-prevent-water-damage/), adding more ice to the pile, and eventually bursting your pipes — the worst-case scenario. This also will help when the water thaws; the last thing you want after finally fixing your frozen pipes is for water to flood the system — and thus, your home.
